If you google, "Patrick O'Brian," you will come up with several sites that discuss him and will lead you to those type of meetings about him. This is quite common, and the Internet is making it more so.

"The Sons of the Desert" is an International society that celebrates the movies of Laurel and Hardy. They have meetings in full dress all over the world. People dress up in Victorian clothing and have dinners to discuss "Flashman's" arcania. Literary "Whist" games are made up and run based on fictional characters who played the game, such as Sherlock Holmes, Hornblower, Mrs Battle, etc.
