Thanks for adding that. It would have been better if they had taken the high road, but so few people do now. Perhaps it has always been nasty in insecure times. I know I've mentioned the acrimony I read about during Adams' presidency- and the Alien and Sedition Acts (or much that was done during the Civil War, or the red scares, or any other time of national stress) was every bit as detrimental to freedom as the Patriot Act- and the mudslinging was every bit as bad. I guess what is really depressing is that things don't seem to change. We aren't really moving forward- we're just going in circles. In some areas we might see "progress" that we personally like, but I wonder if it isn't simply that we're at a high point in the orbit, at least relative to our subjective opinion. Humans may simply be too limited to go further, socially, politically, than we have. We are animals, limited by our biology, and we may be stuck here. Which is too bad, I think.
