Silicon Valley job turnaround elusive
NATIONAL EMPLOYMENT FIGURES SHOW MONTHLY GAIN

The national job market seems to be improving, but it's not clear whether Silicon Valley's will follow suit any time soon.

Santa Clara County gained 2,500 jobs from September to October. But the details of the government job report, released today by the state Employment Development Department, showed less reason for optimism about a local recovery. Most of the gains in jobs were seasonal additions in education and government. Three key sectors -- professional and business services, information and manufacturing -- all lost jobs.

``I don't think it's signaling any kind of a turnaround yet,'' said Steve Cochrane, senior economist at Economy.com.

The state's unemployment rate was 6.6 percent in October, up from a revised 6.5 percent in September. The state added 34,800 jobs from September to October.

In Santa Clara County, the unemployment rate remained unchanged from the revised September rate, at 7.6 percent. Almost 70,000 county residents were unemployed in October.
