Well, I suspect you and everyone on this thread would do exactly the same thing if you had in the money options that were about to expire. No point in letting them expire worthless. Afterall, most of us don't work for the sheer joy of it. Rather, we work for money. :)

As far as alignment of employee interests with the company, I too believe there are more cost effective ways of doing this than options. I like outright grants of stock or generous cash incentive programs for specific short term objectives. They work just as well as options without the high cost.
