I read that WMT developed a very sensitive way of gauging the financial health of their customers... Many working people (the true middle class, NOT the Doctors and Lawyers) tend to get paid on the 15th of each month. Usually, WMT will register a spike in their sales on the 15th, compared with the previous day, the 14th. Recently, these spikes, reportedly, have become much less prominent, and cheap items - and those on sale - have been doing relatively better. The conclusion was that the consumer - under the surface - is stretched.

If this measure is reflective of the overall picture, then it should overflow to other retailers.
