The Republican-crafted bill would make product liability protection for MTBE retroactive... The additive has been found to foul drinking water supplies in at least 28 states when gasoline containing MTBE leaks [from underground gas tanks] or is spilled into surface or groundwater. Lawsuits have been filed in at least a dozen states from California to New England asking that the MTBE makers help pay for water cleanup...
