portage,

After you climb into your fallout shelter, let me assure you that the SelectSmart Prez selector seems utterly benign. Your's is the first indication of paranoia I've seen regarding this innocuous bit of fun.

Re: Besides, the personality/image factor has become more important than issues in recent elections. Sad but true. Witness bush and schwartzenegger.

I've just watched a delightful hour of Bush and Rove bashing on C-SPAN 2. BookTV videoed Molly Ivins and the authors of the recent books about Karl Rove. They formed a quorum and the case is settled. Rove is guilty of the Victoria Plame leak. Rove is guilty of a lot of dirty tricks.

But one interesting thing about Rove is that he is a malevolent genius. As such, he knows how to run a campaign. Rove's opinion is that the best way to determine how a candidate is going to do in an election is to watch the candidate on TV with the sound off. "Image is everything" said one of the panelists. And I'm sure that Rove has found the essence of politics today. Everything in a campaign is a mere photo op.

By that standard, John Kerry will be the Democratic Party candidate. He towers over all other candidates and his helmet hair is the most dominant feature on a stage as it was last night at the J-J Dinner in Des Moines.
