Bush, unlike Kerry, has never had problems getting the "checks" he needs. The big-biz polluters and defense contractors have written him (and his kind) millions in return for the very favors he has gleefully returned.

Democrats are not focused on the election and won't be focused until after the first of the year. Much depends on what happens to the economy and Iraq between now and then.
