Actually, I've almost entirely quit reading the mainstream U.S. press

Western media is far from perfect, but it is reasonably free, and it is "peer reviewed" - I cannot think right now of a better word. If a Western journalist would begin writing crazy, or lie all over the place - his colleagues or readers or editors would notice, and his reputation would be shot. On the other hand, for example, someone recently posted here a totally wacky article from some Web site, by some paranoid sounding Lutheran preacher - I forgot his name - claiming that the US sent missiles to the ME and to Israel, and that Condi Rice "confirmed" it. This guy can say absolutely anything he wants, and people who want to believe his nonsense will believe it. Who knows, if this story is linked a sufficient number of times from one "independent" web site to another, maybe it will even become "the Truth" - and Condi's denials will be dismissed as a belated cover-up.

I wonder sometimes who's money is funding many of these "independent" Web sites.
