I think you nailed it exactly, they vote for the most familiar candidate. So if you have money and can saturate the air waves with superficial hollow noncommittal (so as not to offend any special interests) advertisements you get elected. Even the debates are a joke. We need a system where people can really find out what a candidate stands for. We also need to eliminate the influence of big money lobbying in Congress. I think term limits would help.
