Since I am utterly and completely ignorant about the raising of children, I feel like I can relate somewhat to those who don't know how to parent. When I workout in my condo pool in the summer, I watch mothers with babies bouncing them around in the water and talking to them. I don't know where and how one learns to do that given that it's not something I ever learned. I could instinctively interact with a child by pointing things out and naming them and talking about them, but noting else seems instinctive to me. I'm glad to see there are books that give parents ideas on how to do that.

Here's a link about the author I found.

I have a friend who works in Early Intervention and she has been going into the homes of at risk babies for years to work with mothers on just these issues. She said it is amazing how little time the uneducated mother spends looking into her baby's eyes and talking to it.
She also did a brief missionary stint in Africa and said she found similar problems because the African woman ties the baby on her back where there is no eye contact or direct communication. It was a very novel idea to these women to actually TALK TO their babies.
