Out of curiosity I calculated the compounded rates of returns for 8 long time, varying success, product approved or late stage product biotech companies since IPO. Not sure what it means looking forward but...

AMLN: IPO 1/17/92 $20.00..cpd rate of return 1.7%
VRTX: IPO 7/24/91 $4.50...cpd rate of return 5.5%
SEPR: IPO 9/23/91 $7.00...cpd rate of return 10.6%
MLNM: IPO 5/7/96 $4.75....cpd rate of return 17.5%
GENZ: IPO 3/26/90 $3.87...cpd rate of return 19.1%
NBIX: IPO 5/23/96 $12.00..cpd rate of return 20.5%
MEDI: IPO 5/8/91 $1.63...cpd rate of return 22.5%
GILD: IPO 1/22/92 $4.31...cpd rate of return 23.1%
AMGN: IPO 9/7/84 $0.10....cpd rate of return 39.5%

For a long time loser (I'm sure there are plenty :-)
LJPC: IPO 6/3/94 $5.50...cpd rate of return -4%
TKTX: IPO 10/17/96 $15.00..cpd rate of retrn -2%
