I have seen people when they sober act like teenagers that never grew up.. they anesthetized themselves and never experienced responsibilities, objectives, life on life terms...

Getting sober is the first step.. Then without help of sponsors these people couldn't get out of bed in the morning and live.. They never made a decision in their life and therefore when they before sober they are still a teenager or some where a little older. It is love for these people who help them get through daily routines. Little things, how to talk to people, keep appointments by showing up, work , dress. It is amazing how much of a transfer you can see in a person after a year of sobriety.

Of course there are many who may have turned to drugs later in life and living after drugs is not as hard. I believe Rush falls in the camp on how to cope with pain without falling back into addiction.
