That is up from 29% a few months ago when the GOP panicked and started their PR blitzes to reverse the slide. But 44% say they will definitely vote against Bush. Of course these numbers are fluid and the Dems don't yet have a candidate, but Bush is in trouble. Bush could win against a weak candidate, but is extremely vulnerable. He has no issues to run on really because none of his policies have succeeded. Also, he has lied to Americans quite a bit. Most Americans now agree they were lied to about the reasons for going to war and that the way Bush did it was wrong. More voters now agree the US is on the wrong track, not the right one. Bush does have tons of money but you cannot buy a national election when your policies have failed. Bush polls strongest on war-time leadership at about 60%, but real war heros like Kerry and Clark would take that away from him lickedy-split. Dean might even be able to in fact. I know about the recent moves toward the GOP versus the Dems, and the tendency of young people to be more conservative, but neither party can win with just their base, and voters are also fickle, changing parties fluidly. Also many of those new conservatives are also socially very liberal. For instance, they may admire Bush but are also environmentalists, for legalizing marijana and for gay and womens rights. Cheney's popularity is a mystery to me. The man is clearly crooked. Maybe the story just hasn't gotten out because he's so secretive. In time though, people will be alarmed when the truth about Cheney comes out. So far, much of the Cheney story has been covered-up. Anyway, the strongest candidates are the ones who can excite the swing-voters in the middle who have no party loyalty. Neither party has a monopoly on anything anymore though the Republicans so largely control right-wing strongholds like Utah and Alabama. Also, this coming year incumbants will be in trouble. People want change because they do feel we're on the wrong track and that we were much better off 4-5 years ago.
