Closest to the president — 48 percent to 43 percent — was Gephardt. sounds like there's no real Dem contender when push comes to shove. Consequently, I must wonder, theoretically what the actual significance of this poll might be.

1. I have nothing to apologize for, though I am sorry you reading comprehension is so weak. 2. In spite of your inability to provide a valid link, I found your article. For the benefit of everyone else, I'll quote some key points from it here: THE SURVEY BY Marist College’s Institute for Public Opinion found that 44 percent of the voters questioned said they planned to definitely vote against the Republican president while 38 percent said they would support his re-election. ... The Marist poll had the president’s approval rating at 53 percent, down from 70 percent in its April poll. [didn't all the major polls have him over 80% last spring?] ... In theoretical matchups against the Democrats, Bush led them all. Closest to the president — 48 percent to 43 percent — was Gephardt. Marist’s telephone poll of 788 registered voters was conducted Oct. 27-29 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. Seems a bit odd, doesn't it, that while 44% of those 788 voters said they would "definitely vote against" Bush and only 38% said they would vote FOR him, the best any candidate could do against him among those same 788 people is to lose 48% to 43%. Maybe some of them intend to "vote against" Bush by voting for Nader, Cynthia McKinney or some other guaranteed loser. Or maybe you should consider a broader array of major polls instead of focusing entirely on one apparently quirky number from one small poll. msnbc.com
