Hey, at least those "mainstreamers" (which is a very broad concept) do get caught and put on notice - to some extent and once in a while. In the never never land of "independent" web sites it's a complete free for all... And, for some [perhaps, bizarre?] reason, great numbers of people tend to drift to those "independents", and to put great faith in them.

I think that the advent of the Internet was a great bonanza to various fringe movements, like neo-Nazis, White Nationalists and many others (edit - I should add, Jihadists). Subjects, which normally people would hesitate to discuss in the office by the water cooler, can be anonymously bounced around in view of the entire world... Makes it much easier to recruit.
