I saw basically the same with clams in Tampa Bay. Wade out with a rake and rake the shells. Get a full one and toss it in a bucket. I didn't see them eating the clams raw.

At a little diner/bar next to a bridge west of Easton they had all you want 1/2 shell oysters for $1.99. Watched them unload the oysters off the boat. Minutes later they were serving them up.

Come on out here. We have an oyster farm right around the corner from us. Westcott Bay oysters, which are supposed to be some of the best in the world. They grow them in hanging racks, but some spawn escape and grow in the bottom. They'll let you come dig buckets of them cheap. Not of interest to me since I don't like oysters, but for locals who do, ambrosia.
