In recent action, the American Stock Exchange's Networking Index, which represents large manufacturers, was up 0.5 percent. Eight of the 15 component stocks rose and seven fell.

The biggest gainer: Ciena (CIEN: news, chart, profile). Shares climbed 36 cents, or 5.8 percent, to $6.59. The company said it's retiring $48 million in debt earlier than expected to save future interest costs. Early debt retirement is sometimes viewed as a sign of financial confidence.

The more broadly based Nasdaq Telecommunications Index was flat.

Fifteen of the 20 largest stocks increased in value, but small losses in the three largest equities, Comcast (CMCSK: news, chart, profile) Qualcomm (QCOM: news, chart, profile) and Ericsson (ERICY: news, chart, profile), put a lid on the index's advance.

EchoStar Communications (DISH: news, chart, profile), up 2.2 percent, was one of the top gainers.

In the phone sector, action lagged once again. Eleven of the 13 stocks in the Standard & Poor's Communications Services Index fell, with CenturyTel (CTL: news, chart, profile) giving up 2.7 percent to $31.86.

AT&T Wireless (AWE: news, chart, profile) was flat.
