LD, thanks for the comments. VA is managed by VALIC, 403B. I have a wide choice of funds to choose from if I want to be in the market. No short funds available. (But with variable option invested in funds, I can loose value if market falls) I guess with the fixed option, they do guarantee my principle. But the costs are high. Management fees are stiff. If I take any out before 59 1/2, there is an additional 10% penalty. VA's are also taxed at my normal tax rate when I take $ out, no long term capital gain rate (20%) available like a mutual fund offers.

If the company goes under (market falls & they owe more to pensions than they have) I have lost my money. No investor protection insurance here. VAs are not a securities product when the fine print is read.
