You are right, it is dangerous to dance with the devil in the pale moonlight (I am indebted to "Batman: the Movie" for the turn of phrase). On the other hand, sycophants are often well rewarded. The thing that is amazing is that someone like Stalin was not even subject to assassination attempts, such as those against Hitler. Of course, there is speculation that his final illness was brought to fatality by his doctors, as he was about to launch an antisemitic campaign........
