From what I have read, a good crt is generally preferable to an LCD for text. Make sure she knows about ClearType if it's an XP machine. It makes a big difference.

Here's my opinion about LCD vs CRT and text display. Yours may vary.

First of all, from what I've read Dell has top notch LCD monitors. I don't have a Dell system, but I do have a Dell LCD. It's great.

There is nothing like LCD to reduce eye strain. There is less flicker. Even if one decides a CRT has a better text display than an LCD, I'll bet that eye strain is still less with the LCD.

The text display on my two LCD monitors is very crisp and clear. But one can definitely see the little gaps on some letters, which if you look closely, is the dot pattern. Clear type available in XP fixes this, but at the expense of crispness IMO. So I leave clear type off, and am very satisfied with the text display. I only notice the slight jagged appearance of 45 degree letters like v or y when specifically looking for it.

To summarize, if your sister is looking for the least eye fatigue, I'd go LCD. If she wants the text to look as typewriter like as possible, then CRT.

Just my opinion. I hope it helps.

Esteban
