An excellent example of a successfully deposed monopoly is the phone company. Some might argue, but I doubt we'd have the communications options we have today if the Bell companies were running the whole show. I think Microsoft is in their old position today, and the government missed a bet that would have greatly stimulated technology by not breaking Microsoft into an operating systems and applications companies.
