I think it all depends on the age of the child asking the question. My son was 19 when all of this happened, so I'm not sure he was emotionally capable of framing a different response. Had I been in his shoes, I'm not sure I would have taken it upon myself to handle it any differently.

I do know that to this day I am very grateful that my parents allowed me to live the fantasy of Santa Clause, just as I'm very grateful that they didn't elaborate on the gory details surrounding my beloved grandfathers death. (the first I'd experienced as a child) If I'd been older, I know they would have handled it differently.

Children do understand "pretend" just as clearly as they understand reality. This child will grow up and eventually develop her own understanding of faith. If she chooses not to believe in a higher power, I suspect she will at least be grateful that Dale handled it the way he did.
