Just look at how ineffectual the Democrats are in blocking the Energy Bill now being voted on post-conference. It is the worst piece of legislation in decades, utterly corrupt and craven, but the Democrats are incapable of stopping it from becoming the law of the land.

The problem is there are too many republicans in the house and senate. Dean wasn't predicting a landslide just a majority, I guess I'll have to look at just who is up for reelection.

As far as Bush winning the WH in 04, personally I really doubt it, the reason I think he can't win is because of the discontent I see among people who are classic swing voters, people who usually lean on the republican side for fiscal and tax reasons. Everyone I know wants Bush out so badly it is unbelievabe and their reasoning comes down to their own pocketbooks for the most part which is the deepest motivation imho. (sad but true). I don't think Bush can win any of the western states CA,WA,Oregon or the Northeast. And he is also very vulnerable in any rust belt state like Indiana on the job loss issue. Michigan also has a job loss problem. These are swing states Bush needs. At this point, Bush can only count on the south and that is all.

Notice this China textile trade war rhetoric coming out of the WH today. Why now? Because Bush and the dems have finally realized that the economy is facing long term structural problems wrt trade. I'm sure the dems figured this out in the primary process. Trumpeting all these blowout economic figures while all this mid level management has been forced to take a job at walmart or starbucks actually hurts republicans.
