China calls for new international order

Prime Minister Wen Jiabao of the People's Republic of China called for the creation of a new international, political and economic order to promote regional growth and to counter an 'unfair and inequitable' old order. Premier Wen said this at the opening of the 2nd annual Boao Forum for Asia where over a thousand business leaders and top government officials from its 24 member countries attended.

The Prime Minister of Singapore Goh Chok Tong said that better Asian integration should not come at the expense of weaker global ties especially with the United States and Europe. He added that, historically, much of Asia's prosperity has been based on access to the big markets of the USA and the European Union. Without them, he said, the economic miracle of Japan and the rise of the Asian Dragons and Tigers would not have taken place.

The President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf called for an Asian consensus on development through cooperation. He urged the Forum to send a message of hope and revival to the poor and dispossessed on our continent.

Robert Mundell, Nobel Prize winner and the 'godfather' of the euro said that US trade imbalances were not caused by the People's Republic of China. He warned that to float the Yuan would be a trap that would be very bad for China and for all other countries in the region and also for the euro.
