OEM versions of XP do not need activation as computer makers (Compaq, Dell, ... ) mostly sell their harware, OS loaded. Activation is normally applicable on retail versions only.

Your reply brings up a lot of questions?

1. Do you get a CD with Windows XP on it when you buy a computer pre-loaded with Windows XP on it from either Dell or Compaq?

2. If you don't get a Windows XP CD what happens if a hard disk on a Dell or Compaq computer fails? How do you reinstall Windows XP after a replacing a hard disk?

3. If Activation is only applicable to retail versions of Windows XP does that also mean you can make major hardware changes to a Dell or Compaq compute without being required to reactivate your copy of Windows XP?

4. If Activation is not required and you get a Windows XP CD when you buy a computer from either Dell or Compaq can you use the CD to install Windows XP on other computers?
