I've heard about such ideas and they do have merits. As you say, we need to live in the real world. To that end there are things that can improve the democracy in US very much:

First and foremost I would ban all corporate contributions to political campaigns and may be even to political organizations. My justification is that politicians must be responsible to the voters who elected them, and since corporations are not allowed to cast votes, they should not be allowed to sway the outcome of elections either.

Secondly, I would require the media to do their civic duty and air equal amount of campaign for all candidates. They have been allocated the bandwidth which a natural resource and they should not mind repaying this privilege.

Thirdly I would like to see run offs in elections. Preferably since all candidates will get more or less the same resources, there will be little need for each party guessing which member will have the best chance of winning and the people will make that choice for them.

Fourth, we should be allowed to vote against a candidate. That would be subtracted from the votes of the person (we'll have to figure out what to do with candidates who end up net negative <vbg>).

And last but not least, we'll have to think about the absolute minimum number of votes that legitimizes a governing body. May be that will force run-offs or coalitions in government when they do not have enough votes.
