Tim,

re: They buy the main product that your country sells. Without these purchases and those of other western countries your countries wealth and income would be much lower. They buy this product at a fair market rate or sometimes when OPEC has one of its more effective moments at a price above a free market rate. I suppose if in addition to being devout and patriotic I was ignorant its possible that I might see things the way you laid them out in your post, but it does require a lot of ignorance or enough unreasoning anger to blind you to reality.

Our reality. It's very easy to see their situation from our perspective. It's much, much harder to put yourself in their shoes, to empathise. In any negotiation (and everything political is negotiation, including war), the first and most important thing is a clear understanding of the motivation of your opponents. Only then can you arrive at an acceptable conclusion to conflicting interests.

The Bush administration doesn't seem to get that, to him it's "my way or the highway"; "if your not with us you are against us".
