Extrapolating that trend yields an increase of 1.7 degrees centigrade by 2100. Again, no catastrophe

So, how did the author jump to that conclusion?? Is the relationship between temperature increase and carbon dioxide a linear relationship? Is even the increase in carbon dioxide linear growth (I would doubt that)?

I would say the chance of these relationships being linear is small. The geological record of past temperature changes says the same thing.
