Despite the massive costs religion has imposed on human society, it persists because children do not question their parents’ beliefs, renowned Oxford scientist Richard Dawkins argued in a fiery lecture last night at Lowell Lecture Hall.

That is so stupid it is laughable. Almost every child questions their parent's beliefs! Were you never a kid? Did you never have kids? I have and they question every word I say these days. Intelligence dies by degrees.

Dawkins did, however, concede that there is a sort of religious quality that characterizes scientific phenomena.
“The sense of transcendence is something that is shared by those who don’t call themselves religious,” Dawkins said.

Now that I would call religious , and why should people not be just as ready to find "God" in a research facility or laboratory or Observatory , as in a Church and the stories of miracles? Miracles abound everywhere from the moment the sun comes up each day in any case, and can be as transcendant to an atheist or someone revering an elephant as much as to someone calling themselves a christian or any other "great wonder-story religion".

In fact they do all the time , and share the ideas in a language of science that has been very destructive in the past , but has become much more benign in recent decades.
Science in the hands of the Tobacco companies can be dangerous to your health , same goes for religion in the hands of some.

I should not have said that.
