Federal or state?

Under current laws, gays - despite the fact that they may wish to legally commit to one another in binding relationships, and may, in fact actually be in decades-long relationships - are currently legally proscribed (because the relationships are not recognized under the law) from inheriting their partner's property, or any of a thousands of other property rights that are available to straights.

At the federal level, the 'Defense of Marriage Act', signed by Clinton - officially bans gay relationships from any of the thousands of provisions in federal policy that pertain to hetero-marriages... such as tax code benefits, Social Security provisions, disaster relief payments, farm subsidies, etc., etc.
