The south wanted to retain slavery and whatever it was they wanted. The north wanted to rule the roost. If there had been a standoff, it would have been like Taiwan and China, but with a long, messy border. The south would have been a racist, repressive state, with constant carnage. The north would have been like Taiwan, with rapid economic development and democratic civilization. If Quebec had voted for independence, then they'd have been on their way and Canada would have been split into two. There was no threat of war to prevent secession. So far, the Quebecois have retained citizenship, which I think was very sensible of them. We lived in Ottawa when Trudeau was Prime Minister and there was constant activity for independence. I thought then and still do that they were nuts to want independence. If anything, eviction might have been a good idea. Kick them out of Canada! But that would make travel to Nova Scotia problematic. Independence from the rest of Canada would be qualitatively different than independence from the repressive, undemocratic People's Republic of China. I would NOT want to become merely a citizen of Quebec if I was Canadian living in Quebec. I think I'd flee to Ontario if Quebec left. Plenty of Chinese fled to Taiwan and around the world. They didn't find Mao's machinations life-enhancing. Taiwan's independence was so long ago now that it is past history. It's a bit like New Zealand used to be part of Australia when both were part of Great Britain and the British Empire. But it voted for independence a century ago. Also, the Maoris signed up for the Treaty of Waitangi. That can't be unraveled either. Britain won't have us and neither will Oz. They certainly are not demanding our return. Nor are they threatening war if we don't comply with a demand they are not making. The megalomaniacs in China obviously need a rethink of how the world works. Yiwu is a good example. Little idea of democratic principles or the concept of freedom. She wouldn't have heard of John Stuart Mill or have read his "On Liberty". bartleby.com She's far too busy preparing for war to bother with crusty old publications like that. Mqurice
