Lucent Technologies Signs Agreement With Qwest Communications to Pave the Way For Voice Over IP (VoIP)

Qwest Plans to Deploy Lucent's Accelerate(TM) Technology, Including New Intelligent Media Gateway
MURRAY HILL, N.J., Nov. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - News) today announced a three-year agreement with Qwest Communications International Inc. to deploy technology from Lucent's Accelerate(TM) portfolio of next-generation products, services and software. Qwest will use Lucent's new 5E-XC(TM) switch technology - a key component of the Accelerate portfolio of products - to replace older technology, consolidate end-offices and lay the groundwork for migration of its network to voice over Internet protocol (VoIP).
VoIP gives customers the ability to use a high-speed data connection instead of traditional telephony to make voice calls to others anywhere in the world. VoIP also allows customers to have greater flexibility and more features to expand their use of voice communications. Qwest plans to integrate the 5E-XC(TM) switch technology into its existing local network. Following lab and field trials next year, Qwest plans to deploy the new intelligent media gateway that will eventually connect existing customers to VoIP networks. This will position Qwest for smooth transition of its 5E-XC(TM) network to softswitch control and effectively transform its entire local network to VoIP in the future.

Qwest will use services from Lucent Worldwide Services, including professional services such as consulting and integration, engineering and installation, to support deployment of the 5E-XC(TM) switch technology.

"At Qwest, we are committed to enhancing our network in ways that help us improve the quality of products and services we deliver to our customers," said Balan Nair, vice president of technology for Qwest. "The deployment of the 5E-XC(TM) switch technology and the intelligent media gateway next year help us take a major step in that direction."

The 5E-XC(TM) switch provides the components and interfaces service providers need to update and modernize networks and provide new revenue- generating features, such as voice messaging and Web portals. As networks migrate from traditional circuit-based networks to IP or packet-based networks, the 5E-XC(TM) switch - with the addition of an IP card - enables cost-effective network convergence to VoIP.
