Dale,

Re: The campaign will certainly become more interesting once this incessant personal sniping is over and we can focus on debating issues between two clear tickets.

That is, if the press ever lets the debate get around to the issues. I still have my doubts on that front. The candidates aren't doing much to help either.

You are right to have your doubts. I was pleasantly surprised a few hours ago to watch Noam Chomsky being interviewed by Charlie Rose. Chomsky made the excellent observation that the two elite candidates that we will end up with will not discuss issues that are important to the bulk of the population. They will not discuss much at all to do with maintaining our families with living wages, they will not discuss the nature of the elite system that is shifting all the rewards of our society to the elite 1% who rule. Many other important topics will be taboo. Such as 9/11.

What they will discuss is topics that are of interest to the elites. Such as trade policies and potential ways to extend the empire, spoken of as spreading democracy and freedom, rather than as it really is, as one-sided contracts for American corporations exploiting smaller and weaker trading partners.

And, of course, the media will report on little of this anyway, with the "horse race" aspect of polling reports absolutely dominating the coverage.
