Wow. It is that perspective that drove me to drink on more than one occasion. How is it that you live with this outlook? Do you know what 'AutoToxic Memes' are?

I usually try to see a glimmer of hope- ie technology advances. (Methane Hydrates, Coal converted via GTL, Nuclear cogenerated hydrogen...)

Low real returns going forward, I can live with that. Utter collapse of society as we know it, well.... reminds me of Level 3 thinking: shape the future by the stories we tell ourselves and one another.

Autotoxic meme's are (my definition) ideas which ultimately destroy their host(s).

AUTO-TOXIC: Dangerous to itself. Highly auto-toxic memes are usually self-limiting because they promote the destruction of their hosts (such as the Jim Jones meme; any military indoctrination meme-complex; any "martyrdom" meme). (GMG) (See exo-toxic.)
