Gephardt, Leiberman, & Kerry all have that -- "play it in the middle mentality" that gets you nowhere -- especially in primary season. In order to undermine DEAN -- you need to talk about the three EEEs at the heart of every, true-blooded progressive/liberal: EDUCATION ENVIRONMENT EQUALITY (opportunity for financial/social/racial justice) The GOP runs on the three MMMs: MORALS MILITARY MONEY ...as in the feel good, quick fix, "cash in pocket" ...once, as a DEM candidate, you capture your desired audience with this message -- you then can gradually appeal to the moderates as the general election approcahes and you've got a good/solid chance of being the nominee. Moderates/Swingers are generally interested in one theme: "What have you done for me lately". They are less entrenched in any ideology and ahve more of a paycheck to paycheck mentality. JOBS is usually the winner here. The GOP, for its part -- MUST start in the center and, more or less, stay in and around there in order not to look like they are not pandering to the BIBLE BELTers or to BIG BIZ -- who are the two big donors. The GOP can't take as much for granted, for they walk a finer line in the end -- in that they become too static, predictable in their message. ...also BUSH II, specifically, ran as a moderate and, is in fact a right-winger. Clinton beat BUSH I with this approach. He painted BUSH I as a RIGHT WINGER and it was difficult publicly for BUSH I and later Dole to defend. As much as many folk hate the liberal left -- they (Independents/Swingers) hate the FAR Right even more -- simply because of the OPPRESIVENESS/RIGIDNESS of their general message/philosophy; -- its counter-American. -JH
