The United States had 50 percent of the world's gross domestic product in 1945, Mr. Dobbins notes. Not only could it afford to finance the reconstruction of Europe and Japan, but there was no alternative. By the 1990's, however, the share of G.D.P. was 22 percent.

So, what's this famous "US Hegemony" that everyone is blathering about ? And this percentage will continue to fall as China continues to ramp up their economy.

We may have a large, widespread military, but economic strength is arguably the most important and durable component of a countries strengths.

He quotes U.S. troops but neglects to mention the 130,000 trained Iraq troops... His calculations for amount of troops required is questionable as the north and south appear to not need the concentration of troops that Baghdad does.

As for U.N. peace keeping troops.. The U.N.ran out of Iraq the first time they got hit... I doubt any U.N. troops will come into Iraq while suicide bombings continue.

As for the plan being nothing to do with anything the Clinton administration did seems to be a reach. I doubt the administration would put our military at risk if they felt Clinton administration had a better idea.

Finally , bush has committed to stay as long as it takes in Iraq. I believe we are in Iraq for a long time, unless the people throw us out.
