Yeah, Australia's got a lock on good, affordable Shiraz for a few years to come. Great grape for the area. For something really special from the overall general region, see if your local wine retailer can get Cornerstone Cab/Merlot blend (from New Zealand). It's a few sheckels over $20 (somewhat apart from this thread topic) but splurging a bit extra for the super-smooth silky texture and rich cherry fruit will convince your significant other that she's on a second honeymoon.

The cab I tried and liked was the 2001 vintage. Hope you like it. If not, well, like the Romans said, in matters of taste there are no disputes.

I started really enjoying wine in the early 80s. I remember drinking Stag's Leap, Sterling and Jordan cabernet's that cost about $16-18 a bottle then, but can't be touched for a fraction of that now, so I really do appreciate a good value.

Let me know what you think.
