We still remember his aggressive statements delivered during the earlier standoff between the two countries. But it seems that there is more to Mr Sinha’s ‘statement baazi’ than just the immediacy of circumstances. Notice his latest gem in an interview to a Pakistani TV channel. Mr Sinha has reportedly said that “India will hold Pakistan responsible” in the event that any of its diplomats in Afghanistan comes to harm. Here is a country conquered by the United States and hosting US and NATO troops to ensure security and Mr Sinha holds out a threat to Pakistan for being responsible for the safety of India’s citizens! Not long ago, Mr Sinha and the entire Indian government were talking about the miserable failure of Pakistan’s Afghan policy. Commentators couldn’t stop talking about how Pakistan had been ousted from its backyard and how India had made inroads. Now Mr Sinha seems to think Pakistan has the wherewithal to actually harm Indian diplomats who have been stationed in Afghanistan in droves along with intelligence personnel and military and other advisors and technicians. Mr Sinha has obviously been monitoring the latest tidings from the west which blame Pakistan for organising and supporting bands of Taliban in Afghanistan. And he would be remiss if he were not to take advantage of this trend and add his voice to it. Indeed, in the coming days he might even decide to make more noise on this issue in order to gain a greater audience. Afghanistan remains a dangerous place for everyone, including President Hamid Karzai. Mr Karzai still cannot trust his own defence minister to provide him security and is dependent for that on the US. It is a safe bet, given the numbers and activities of Indian personnel, diplomatic and not-so-diplomatic, that one of them might come to some harm. So Mr Sinha has decided to put out a warning in order to spin a yarn about something that might happen even if there were no Pakistani footprint within miles of it. We think that Pakistan’s Foreign Office should take note of this newer version of pre-emptive doctrine and inform the world that it is India which is linked to the ruling northern alliance and it is India that is asserting itself in Afghanistan, not Pakistan, and it is India that must face up to the consequences of its involvement there. Afghanistan has too many crazies running amok and it won’t do India any good to pin the blame for any mishap on Pakistan. * Mr Sinha’s latest gem Ever since he took office, India’s foreign minister Yashwant Sinha has shown a remarkable tendency to shoot from the hip when it comes to Pakistan.
