Yossi Halevi is a very centrist Israeli, who has done a lot of outreach (he's written books on Islam) and is an ex-supporter of Oslo. So he's a good person to explain why the Israeli center is still standing behind Sharon, which he does in this essay. Israel is not a particularly good example of polarization, if you are thinking of polarization among Israeli Jews. Between Jews and Arabs, it is extreme.
