Sent: Thursday, November 20, 2003 4:59 PM Subject: BUSH GOT WELL AND TRULY TOPPLED Lori, friends, BUSH JUST GOT TOPPLED.... I have just walked home from Trafalgar Square and I really hope the news networks aren't keeping this one quiet. I joined the protest at Malet Street but got stuck - THE NUMBERS WERE MASSIVE - we still hadn't left at 4pm and the route was 4 miles long - IT WAS SOLID. Eventually after we started I realised we weren't going to get to Trafalgar Square in time so we cheated and cut across. WOW - you would be so proud. The Square was totally packed. they announced a 300,000 presence (the news networks here are reporting 'in excess of 100.000'), but IT WAS HUGE. If you think that at 4pm - 4.30pm at least, the end of the protest had still not been able to leave, then you get an idea of the scale of it. It stretched for FOUR MILES. Any how, I'd been in the Square about 20 minutes and got to hear Ron Kovic speak and after that, a countdown from 10 and THE STATUE WAS TOPPLED - amazing - a big fake bronze effigy - GIGANTIC, and it fell and was trampled...there was a big screen running film of Bush in the background (massive jeering when the shot lingered on him), interspersed with pretzels etc - WE DID YOU PROUD! There were a lot of Americans there too - I read previously that they were going to lead the march, so take heart from all of this - we are with you TOTALLY. The police were very cool - hardly noticed them, but I have never been so wedged in a crowd as I was at the Square tonight - I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW BIG IT WAS, and very very peaceful. I've still not heard of any arrests today. It is probably still going on down there. A friend phoned earllier to say there had been 2 fires lit (not in violence), so maybe they're burning him now as well!! I'll send links as I find them tomorrow...
