GEORGE'S £1M FISH SUPPER Nov 22 2003

1300 cops guard Bush as he has pub lunch in Blair village at end of controversial visit

By Ian Smith

PRESIDENT George Bush flew home to Washington last night after tucking into the world's most expensive fish supper.

Bush and Tony Blair had the same meal of fish, chips and mushy peas at a pub during a four-hour visit to the Prime Minister's Sedgefield constituency security for which cost around £1 million.

Around 1300 officers swarmed around the area as Bush and his wife, Laura, ended their four-day visit to Britain at Tony Blair's home in the village of Sedgefield.

But as the two leaders and their wives went for their pub lunch at the Dun Cow Inn, they were met by hundreds of protesters.

Demonstrators held banners and chanted slogans demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister and the president.

Students, Moslem groups, and protest veterans were joined by locals.

But they didn't have it all their own way. Kelly Smith, 39, a Texan who lives in Sedgefield, made a lone stand in support of her president.

Draped in the stars and stripes, she was harangued by protesters and conducted a heated debate with one of them.

She said: ``I voted for Mr Bush.

``I fully support him because I am an American and I am a loyal conservative American.''

And the protesters outside didn't seem to put the Blairs and the Bushes off their pub grub.

As well as their £7.95 fish suppers, Bush, Blair and wife Cherie enjoyed a starter of cream of leek and potato soup at £3.50. Laura Bush had the same main course but started off with Mediterranean vegetables at £4.95.

Etc, Etc........
