It's amazing to watch the JFK retrospectives. Those were days of optimism and competence, with darker forces grumbling only in the background. What's striking is the difference over 40 years from eloquence to mute and brute force. Nothing from Congress or the Executive has any integrity or idealism these days. Maybe its true that the times make the man, and that with no superpower opponent the times are too easy, so we end up with an idiot front-man and predatory puppetmasters spinning in the background; that somehow the collective intelligence is that we can still survive, so screw it, take care of the family and don't even bother to vote. That'll change rapidly when true threats emerge, like bioterror. What's unknown is whether a true leader of eloquence and inspiration will also.
