I still haven't formed an opinion on whether the vision-thing was there all along or whether that's just the latest way to frame the war. I certainly prefer it to the earlier framings, but I don't know if it's a commitment or just the frame-du-jour, or perhaps the frame-du-election. Since we're in Iraq, anyway, I certainly prefer the democracy approach. The other approaches were never compelling, IMO.

Still, if there were a poll on what priorities the country would prefer and the choices were, say, fix Medicare, fix immigration, fix the economy, and bring democracy to Iraq, I don't think more than a handful of even registered Republicans, let alone all voters, would pick the last one. The others are clearly more pressing, seems to me.

It will be nice if democracy in Iraq happens, though.

President Bush's comments are very inspiring.

"We did not charge hundreds of miles into the heart of Iraq and pay a bitter cost of casualties and liberate 25 million people only to retreat before a band of thugs and assassins. We will help the Iraqi people establish a peaceful and democratic country in the heart of the Middle East."

"view the rise of democracy in Iraq as a powerful threat to their ambitions. In this, they are correct. They believe their acts of terror against our coalition, against international aid workers and against innocent Iraqis will make us recoil and retreat. In this, they are mistaken."
