Either you're healthy and growing, or slowly decaying and dying. Cultures which are not growing but contracting, are slowly dying. That may feel "right" at some intuitive level, but I can think of no rational basis for it. The culture should grow, I agree, but the population is another matter. Crowding is very hard on culture. Your comparison with the stock market is way to facile. And even the stock market shouldn't be growing beyond its support level.
