I'm not too up on this, but I thought that earlier immigrants were from the colonies, which means they were already aculturated, and the best and the brightest from the colonies, to boot. It's hard for me to see how the French, for example, could assimilate refugees from Cambodia or Pakistan or Brazil, for example. There's just no apparent basis for a cultural blending. I'm not sanguine about assimilation. Assimilation is hard enough here.
