Gephardt Takes Out Ad In Iowa to Respond to Dean

The first negative ad of the Democratic presidential campaign -- by Howard Dean against Rep. Richard A. Gephardt (Mo.) -- has sparked the first counterattack ad.

Responding to a Dean spot in Iowa that criticized him for supporting the war in Iraq and the $87 billion measure for postwar reconstruction, Gephardt's Iowa ad declares:

"Howard Dean's attacking Dick Gephardt for a position Dean took himself."

The ad uses a Sept. 25 debate in which the former Vermont governor says "we have no choice" but to spend the $87 billion, but that he would finance it by repealing President Bush's tax cuts. Gephardt appears at the end, saying that "leadership is about making tough decisions and sticking with them."

In a statement, Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi said that they have not "disparaged Congressman Gephardt's motives or intent. . . . We have simply stated the facts . . . to educate Iowans on an important policy difference."
