The GOP blamed Grey Davis for attacking Riordan during the GOP primary but leaving Simon alone. Riordan could have beaten Davis but he got the much-easier more right-wing Simon instead.

I believe the GOP is now doing what Davis did to them in so far as stealthily supporting Dean. It's a very smart move because with the field so bunched together, 5% extra could give Dean the frontrunner status and maybe even decide the nomination. Since the Bushies don't have any Republican to run against they can concetrate on carefully trying to take Kerry and Clark out and deliver Dean. They promoted Nader in 2000 as well, though always behind the scenes and just by never criticizing him.

Six months ago they were also going after Edwards and talking up Lieberman (another of ther favorites to run against), but no more since those two don't seem to have a chance now. Recently they have been talking up Hillary.
The GOP can never come out and actually compliment Dean but they're just helping him out in other ways. Under the radar mostly. If Kerry loses to Dean in NH no one will celebrate more than the GOP. It would be a sad day for the Dems and might trigger Gore's entrance into the race, that is if Clark or Gaphardt don't catch fire.
