Soros has it right: <The world is looking to us for leadership. We have provided it in the past; the main reason why anti-American feelings are so strong in the world today is that we are not providing it in the present.>

Scott:
Wise words from George Soros. Bubbles come and go.
I see no general condemnation of the Administration, but lots to think about.
For the US the increasing development of technology and scientific knowledge comes because of our economic stability, schools, institutions, industries, and financial support by the banking industry.
That is an unstoppable force which accelerates as the genetic code is unraveled,as new disease resistant and more productive crops are developed, as human tissue can be grown to repair wounds or defects, open heart surgery, and biochemical detectors are developed. AIDS medicines, malaria
medicines which can save millions.
Other countries are capable, but it is the US who has the dollars to make these things useful on a large scale.
The development of these things is proceeding exponentially, which may appear to be a bubble but what kind of bubble? Good? Or bad? And does it need to crash as the market did.
I would consider the recent bubble in terrorist activities - the acceleration in bombings and shellings, as the more threatening bubble.
A bubble that the US is determined to stop- must be stopped before terrorists get more powerful arms.
It required an escalation of our military forces and huge improvements in our national security ,immigration system, and intelligence community.
We could have cowered in fear, providing only self defense
which would be ineffective but comforting ( until the next blast). Or aggressively hunt down the terrorists and supporters.
We have done a little of both, although the enemy has great complaints against our actions abroad (which they already had before any action started)
It is true that GWB or the Administration "started something", took a new course of action.
Success in Afghanistan and Iraq should be in inspiration to to all countries that have problems with terrorists - giving them hope that they can deal effectively with the dissidents within their own borders. ( who at this time are blowing up their own relatives and fellow religious travelers)
Should the US stop producing new medicines and procedures, more efficient crops, better computer operating systems and equipment, more efficient cars or energy sources?
Just so we may be more equal to the capability of other nations and therefore a lessor threat to their desire to return to an ancient glory and to the practice of ancient religions which do not tolerate non-muslims.
