<following our principles> I agree that following our principles is of the utmost importance. I am concerned that we have set many of them aside in recent years. There is a difference between following our principles and using the appeal of our principles as a smokescreen for doing things that are decidedly against our principles. Those who opposed the invasion of Iraq did not do so because they put a lower value on freedom and democracy -- on the contrary, those who opposed the war did so on the basis of principle. Those who opposed the war do not want to see our principles sacrificed as a result of fear, greed, hatred or the lust for power and control. 9/11 opened the door for a group of people to increase their influence -- and that influence has done nothing but undermine the principles of freedom and democracy. They will tell you that the ends justify the means -- but if you believe in the principles of America, the ends do not justify the means. The means must adhere to our principles -- these principles were the first things swept aside in the wake of 9/11 by our own government -- and that is something that should concern us all.
